Shehu Sani: PDP, LP senators aiding APC

Date:

Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has claimed that senators from the Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) are working “harmoniously” with lawmakers of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sani made the remark in a post on X (formerly Twitter) while reacting to comments by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who described political defectors as cowards. He suggested that although no mass defection has occurred in the upper chamber, the opposition side of the Senate chamber has become largely inactive and empty in substance.

“The opposition sits on the left-hand side of the Senate President in the chamber. It appears that the side is becoming empty,” Sani wrote.

“The Bauchi Governor reportedly called the defectors ‘cowards’. The truth is that even without defections, the LP, PDP, APGA, SDP, and NNPP senators are working ‘harmoniously’ with the ruling party senators,” he added.

Sani’s comment comes amid concerns that Nigeria’s opposition parties have failed to provide strong checks and balances against the APC-led government.Political observers have noted that cooperation between opposition lawmakers and ruling party senators could weaken legislative oversight and accountability in the 10th National Assembly.

Neither the APC nor any of the mentioned opposition parties have publicly responded to Sani’s remarks as of the time of filing this report.
