The Ogun State Government has sealed Adatan Market in Abeokuta for environmental infractions and illegal roadside trading.
Farouk Akintunde, Special Adviser on Environmental Protection and Chairman of the Ogun State Task Force on Environmental Compliance, announced the action in a statement on Tuesday.
Akintunde said the market was closed due to traders dumping refuse into drainage channels and displaying goods on walkways and drains, which posed environmental and public health risks.
“Market traders across the state should take ownership of drainage channels in front of their shops, desilt them, and maintain cleanliness to prevent flooding. Every Thursday has been designated for market sanitation, which must be strictly observed,” he said.
The closure followed several months of warnings and engagement with traders, which failed to yield compliance, according to Akintunde.
He noted that the enforcement measures reflect the government’s zero-tolerance policy on environmental pollution and its commitment to keeping the state clean.
In a similar crackdown, Alaga Restaurant on Mercy Road, Panseke, and Sintinatti Bar in Oke-Ilewo, both in Abeokuta, were sealed for improper management of wastewater discharged into the environment.
The closure of Adatan Market aligns with actions by other state governments, including Nasarawa, which recently shut Lafia Modern Market due to poor sanitary conditions.
Earlier in October, Lagos State authorities also indefinitely closed Itedo Market in Lekki for repeated environmental violations and illegal roadside trading.
Ogun State officials have warned that further enforcement actions will be taken against markets and businesses that fail to comply with environmental regulations.
