The National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has reaffirmed the commission’s readiness to conduct a free, fair, and transparent election in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Speaking at INEC’s Induction and Strategic Retreat in Lagos, he emphasized that the election must be beyond reproach and a historic milestone for Nigeria.
Amupitan highlighted the immense scrutiny facing the commission, noting that over 200 million Nigerians and the entire African continent will be watching the process closely. He urged INEC staff to uphold the highest standards of integrity, stressing that the work ahead will be demanding and rigorous.
The INEC chairman outlined a vision for the commission to become a globally recognized institution. He described the goal as transforming INEC into the best election management body in African, example of technological efficiency, democratic values, and institutional integrity.
Amupitan stressed that the 2027 elections must exceed national expectations and set a continental standard. He encouraged staff to leverage technology to ensure a smooth, transparent, and credible process, emphasizing that misconduct of any form would not be tolerated.
Concluding his address, he urged the commission’s personnel to aim higher than previous elections, framing the 2027 polls as a proof-of-concept for a world-class, technology-driven election. The event served as a strategic platform to align all national commissioners, secretaries, and directors on INEC’s mandate for credible electoral conduct.
