Nigerian Man Killed in Toronto Bus Shooting

Date:

A 46-year-old Nigerian man, Osemwengie Irorere, has been shot dead inside a bus at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto, Canada, police have confirmed.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening at about 7 p.m. at the terminal located around Yorkdale Road and Allen Road, according to the Toronto Police Service.

In a statement released on Wednesday, police said Irorere and the suspect boarded a GO bus at the terminal, where the suspect allegedly opened fire before fleeing the scene on foot.

Officers who responded to the shooting found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts, Irorere was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a 40-year-old Toronto resident, Tyrel Gibson, was arrested a short time later, and a firearm was recovered. Gibson has been charged with first-degree murder.

Investigators added that the suspect was scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Monday, January 5, 2026.

The killing comes less than two weeks after another Nigerian, John Onetufo, was stabbed to death in the Lewisham area of London on New Year’s Eve. British police later confirmed that a suspect has been charged in connection with that case.
