Osugbo Society Calls for Transparent Awujale Selection Process

Date:

Members of the Osugbo Society in Ijebu-Ode have urged Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun to reconstitute the Council of Afobajes, the body responsible for selecting the Awujale, to ensure transparency and credibility.

The call was made during the society’s first meeting of 2026, where members expressed concern over the participation of individuals in the selection process without proper vetting.

Oluwo Osugbo of Ijebu-Ode, Oluwo Omobolanle Bakare, condemned the exclusion of the Osugbo Society from the council, noting its position as third in the traditional hierarchy under the 1957 Constitution. He warned that allegations of bribery among kingmakers could have been avoided with careful appointments.

“I want the government to investigate and verify the conduct of those who will serve as kingmakers. They should not appoint just anybody, but people with integrity,” Bakare said.

He further appealed to the governor to formally recognize the Osugbo Society as part of the council, emphasizing that the 1957 constitution explicitly includes the Oluwo as a member.

Bakare also questioned the large number of shortlisted candidates, calling 95 nominees “unwieldy” and suggesting that only a few should be presented to Ifa for consideration. He argued that without the Osugbo, the Council of Afobajes is incomplete.

The Otu-Erelu Osugbo and Iyalorisa-General of Akile Ijebu, Mrs. Osoteku Alawiye, praised the governor’s suspension of the previous selection committee, describing it as a necessary step to maintain peace in the town.

She called for the formation of a fresh committee that would include all relevant traditional institutions, including the Osugbo Society, to guarantee an inclusive and credible selection process.

Alawiye highlighted the historical importance of Ijebu-Ode and stressed that the selection of the Awujale must adhere strictly to traditional rites and due process to ensure stability and progress.
