The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has rejected the strike declared by the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), assuring students that ongoing examinations will continue as scheduled.
The union had directed its members to suspend work after a congress on Tuesday, citing what it described as “amputated” salaries for January and February. The chapter chairman, Idou Keinde, said lecturers did not receive their full pay, including allowances such as the Professorial Allowance and the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance.
Keinde stated that the lecturers would not resume duties until the unpaid salary components were fully settled, insisting that the union could not continue working under the current conditions.
Reacting to the development, the university’s Head of Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said the management had taken note of the strike declaration but maintained that due process was not followed. She added that the university had continued discussions with the union’s leadership to address the issues raised.
The management also confirmed that semester examinations would proceed as planned, stressing that any disruption could affect students preparing for internships, the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), and the Nigerian Law School, while exams earlier postponed by departments would be rescheduled.
