At least 23 people have been confirmed dead and 108 others injured following coordinated bomb explosions that struck three locations in Maiduguri on Monday evening.
The attacks occurred at the Maiduguri Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover area, causing widespread panic across the city.
According to the Borno State Police Command, the explosions happened around 7:24 p.m. and were carried out by suspected suicide bombers. Police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, said investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attacks.
Security agencies, including police tactical units, the military, and bomb disposal experts, were immediately deployed to the affected areas. The sites were secured and thoroughly swept by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit to prevent further threats.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmaji, visited the scenes to assess the situation and oversee response efforts. Victims were evacuated by emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the State Emergency Management Agency, to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Authorities said normalcy has been restored, with heightened security presence and surveillance across Maiduguri to prevent further incidents. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
Meanwhile, Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the attacks, describing them as βdespicable, cruel, and cowardly,β particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. He assured residents that security forces are intensifying operations, especially in insurgent strongholds such as the Sambisa Forest, to prevent further attacks.
The governor also called for increased vigilance, especially as the Eid period approaches, stressing that efforts are underway to safeguard lives and property across the state.
