Veteran Nigerian singer Konga has criticised what he described as inadequate support for music legends by younger artists in the industry.
Speaking on the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, the “Kabakaba” crooner said contemporary musicians should do more to support pioneers who laid the foundation for the industry.
Konga specifically referenced Davido, suggesting that the funds he received during his 2021 birthday celebration could have been used to assist veteran artistes.
Davido had received about ₦200 million from fans and associates, added ₦50 million of his own money, and donated the total sum to orphanages across Nigeria.
While acknowledging the gesture, Konga argued that directing part of the funds toward struggling music veterans could have revitalised their careers and the industry as a whole.
“The present crops of Nigerian artists need to humble themselves,” he said, adding that many pioneers have been forced into difficult situations due to lack of support.
He cited artistes such as Daddy Showkey and Baba Fryo as examples, suggesting that modest financial support could have helped them stage comebacks.
Konga also emphasised the contributions of earlier generations, including Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade and Majek Fashek, noting that Nigerian artists had achieved international recognition long before the current wave.
He concluded that greater recognition and support for industry veterans would strengthen the music ecosystem and preserve its legacy.
