Former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from the party, citing the need for “strategic realignment” amid Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. His supporters under the Kwankwasiyya Movement confirmed he is set to formally register with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday in Kano.

In his resignation statement posted on Facebook, Kwankwaso described the decision as difficult but necessary, saying he was aligning with a platform that offers better prospects for national change. He also thanked NNPP National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed and party stakeholders, as well as members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement nationwide, for their loyalty and support.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement directed its members across the country to immediately register with the ADC at ward level and participate actively in party activities, describing the move as being in the best interest of the movement, Kano State, and the nation ahead of future political contests.

Reacting, the Kano State chapter of the NNPP said the resignation did not come as a surprise, noting it followed consultations among opposition figures aimed at forming a broader alliance to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The party nevertheless appreciated Kwankwaso’s contributions and wished him well ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, a factional NNPP chairman, Agbo Major, dismissed the development as “a formality,” insisting Kwankwaso had ceased to be a party member since his expulsion in 2023, while affirming the party’s resolve to strengthen its structures and remain a viable opposition platform.
