FG Unveils New Textbook Ranking System to Improve Education Standards

Date:

The Federal Government has introduced a National Textbook Ranking System for primary, junior and senior secondary schools to improve quality and standardisation in Nigeria’s education sector.

The Federal Ministry of Education said the new policy is aimed at eliminating substandard textbooks and ensuring only curriculum-compliant, high-quality learning materials are used in classrooms nationwide.

Under the initiative, the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council will continue approving textbooks, while newly created subject committees will rank approved books to determine the most suitable options for each subject and level.

The government said only a limited number of top-ranked textbooks will be approved for use, while any textbook not ranked under the new system will be barred from schools regardless of previous licensing.

According to the ministry, the policy will take effect in September 2026 after stakeholder consultations and completion of the evaluation framework, as part of efforts to improve learning outcomes.
