Tinubu Heads to Jos Amid Deadly Attacks

Date:

Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to visit Jos on Thursday following renewed tension in the Plateau State capital after an attack that left at least 28 people dead in Jos North Local Government Area.

The victims were reportedly killed on Palm Sunday when suspected bandits attacked Angwan Rukuba, prompting widespread condemnation and heightened security concerns in the area.

The President’s visit follows a meeting on Tuesday with Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Presidential Villa. According to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu postponed an earlier trip to inaugurate operations at the Gateway International Cargo Airport in Iperu, Ogun State, to prioritise the Plateau visit.

Governor Mutfwang described the attack as “barbaric” and an act of terrorism, confirming that victims’ bodies had been evacuated to the mortuary, with some families already conducting burials. He added that security agencies had restored calm to affected areas and prevented attempts by looters to exploit the situation.

Tension briefly resurfaced in parts of Jos on Wednesday following reports of the killing of two women in Jos North, triggering panic in several communities and markets, including Farin-Gada, Bauchi Road, Angwan Rukuba, Nasarawa Gwong, Kabong, Bukuru, and Terminus. However, security operatives quickly intervened to prevent further unrest.

Personnel of Operation Enduring Peace, supported by newly deployed police tactical teams and intelligence units, were mobilised to maintain order across identified flashpoints.

Meanwhile, Olatunji Disu ordered intensified security deployments in vulnerable areas. He had earlier directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Umar Nadada, to assess the situation and coordinate security operations in the state. Police authorities said visible policing would continue until normalcy is fully restored.
