Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, under the Great Ife Students’ Union, have resolved to stage a large-scale protest on April 28, threatening to shut down movement within and around the campus over unresolved welfare and academic concerns.

The decision was reached during a congress held at Awo Café, where students unanimously backed a “peaceful but firm” demonstration expected to begin by 6 a.m., with major roads and campus gates to be blocked until their demands are met.

The congress mandated the Students’ Union leadership to coordinate the protest and intensify sensitisation across halls of residence to ensure massive participation, reflecting growing frustration among students over lingering issues.

Despite the planned disruption, the union insisted the protest would remain non-violent and in line with the tradition of orderly demonstrations, while urging students to participate responsibly and maintain discipline.

The looming action has raised concerns over possible disruption to academic activities and movement in Ile-Ife, while the university management has yet to publicly respond to the students’ demands or the threat of a campus shutdown.
