Genevieve Nnaji Returns to Acting After Eight Years, Stars in BBC Thriller ‘Wahala’

Date:

Veteran Nollywood actress Genevieve Nnaji is set to make a major return to the screen after nearly eight years away from acting, taking on a lead role in BBC Studios’ upcoming thriller series Wahala.

Nnaji’s last on-screen appearance was in the 2018 film Lionheart, which also marked her directorial debut and went on to gain international recognition.

The new six-part drama is an adaptation of Wahala, a novel by BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Theresa Ikoko. It is being produced by BBC Studios through its Firebird Pictures division and is expected to air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.

The series features a strong ensemble cast, including Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma, alongside Nnaji.

Set in London, Wahala follows the lives of four Nigerian-British women as their friendships are tested and long-buried secrets and past traumas begin to surface.

Speaking about her return, Nnaji described the project as exciting and meaningful, saying she is happy to be part of the production and impressed by its storyline and creative team.

Executive producer Elizabeth Kilgarriff also praised the cast, describing them as exceptional and expressing confidence in their ability to bring the characters to life.

Nnaji’s comeback has sparked widespread excitement among fans, many of whom have awaited her return to acting since her shift toward directing following Lionheart.

Her involvement in Wahala marks one of the most anticipated Nollywood-to-international crossover appearances in recent years.
