Ego and Competition Hindering Nigerian Artists — Joeboy

Date:

Afrobeats singer Joeboy has said ego and unhealthy competition are negatively affecting collaborations among Nigerian artists. Speaking during an interview on Cool FM Lagos alongside fellow artist Wizard Chan, Joeboy said many musicians now see collaborations as contests rather than creative partnerships.

According to Joeboy, he prefers working with artists he has a good personal relationship with because it reduces tension and rivalry in the studio. He explained that he expects featured artists to bring their best to a song rather than compete for superiority.

The singer stated that collaborations should focus on creativity and improving the overall quality of music. He added that he does not feel threatened when another artist performs strongly on a track, insisting that good collaborations benefit everyone involved.

Wizard Chan also blamed ego for conflicts during collaborations, saying some artists attempt to control how others record their verses. He argued that artists should be allowed to express themselves freely without unnecessary interference or pressure to imitate another person’s style.

He further noted that some musicians even rewrite their verses after hearing stronger contributions from collaborators, describing the practice as unhealthy competition. Both artists agreed that genuine collaboration should bring diversity, originality, and balance to music rather than rivalry.
