Kano Community Under Siege as Bandits Carry Out Deadly Raid

Date:

Panic gripped the Yankamaye community in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State after suspected bandits attacked the area on Monday evening, killing five residents and injuring four others. The attackers reportedly stormed the community on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately, forcing residents to flee for safety.

Residents said the assailants, believed to have crossed from Rimaye village in neighbouring Katsina State, invaded the town around 6 p.m. According to local sources, the gunmen split into groups and attacked different parts of the community before retreating.

Former Vice Chairman of Tsanyawa Local Government Council, Ado Haladu Yankamaye, confirmed the incident and said the victims were buried on Tuesday according to Islamic rites. He noted that most of those killed were family breadwinners and lamented that the community had suffered repeated attacks within the past five months.

Residents blamed the worsening insecurity on the porous border between Kano and Katsina states and the delayed response of security personnel due to the remote nature of the community. One resident said the attackers arrived on about 12 motorcycles carrying heavily armed men.

Confirming the attack, Kano State Police spokesperson Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said police operatives and members of the Joint Task Force had been deployed to the area, while efforts were ongoing to track down the perpetrators. The latest incident has heightened concerns over growing insecurity and recurring bandit attacks in border communities across northern Nigeria.
