Former Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Peter Okebukola, on Friday charged graduating students of Caleb University, Imota, Lagos to maximize use of their entrepreneurial skills in helping their families and the nation.
Okebukola, also Chairman, Board of Trustees of the institution, gave the advice at the University’s 8th Convocation, for its Amethyst graduating class of 2018.
ROYAL NEWS reports that 23 students made first class; 200 students made second class upper; 148 bagged second class lower; 28 made third class from the undergraduate programme; while 8 students made distinction and 71 had pass in the postgraduate studies,
He said while the university had invested so much in training the students, it was time for them to invest their creative energies in solving the problems of the society.
“Stick to the noble ideas of Caleb University which include godliness, innovation, service, integrity, teamwork, excellence and creativity.
“I join everyone present to wish you well in the journey of life,” he said.
Okebukola lauded the university for making conscious efforts at setting global standards in quality education.
He also commended the varsity for its entry into postgraduate education with the first doctorate programme as recently approved by NUC.
“We appreciate the NUC for providing the enabling environment where Caleb university and other leading universities in Nigeria are creating the needed impact, ” he said.
Retired Brig. Gen. Mobolaji Johnson, Chancellor of the University, urged the graduands to henceforth think about what they could do for the country to move it forward, and not what the country could do for them.
Johnson said such thought would awaken their spirit of self-reliance, which would in turn affect the country economically.
Prof Ayandiji Aina, the University Vice-Chancellor, said the university was sending forth 478 graduates for the 2018 session, as against the 409 sent forth last session.
Aina said a total of 399 students graduated from its degree programmes and 79 from postgraduate studies.
Aina named the best graduating student for the session as Miss Crystabel Nya of the Computer Science Department, with a Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate (CGPA) of 4.81.
He said Mr Julius Adesina of Master of Science Accounting programme, with a CGPA of 4.86, was the best graduating student for the postgraduate class of 2018.
Prof. Fola Tayo, the university Pro – Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, appealed to the graduands to initiate the much coveted true change in the country.
Tayo said : Your parents have invested good fortunes on you, your teachers have invested good knowledge and discipline in you. Please do not fail them or yourselves.”
