ADC Raises Alarm Over INEC’s Refusal to Oversee Party Convention

Date:

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of partisan conduct, alleging that its refusal to monitor the party’s eighth National Convention in Abuja amounts to a breach of democratic responsibility and a sign of institutional bias.

The allegation was contained in a secretariat report presented on Tuesday by ADC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola during the party’s convention. The party argued that INEC failed in its statutory duty by declining to observe the event, which involved key leadership decisions and organisational processes.

According to the ADC, the Electoral Act requires INEC to monitor political party conventions, and the commission’s absence raises serious concerns about fairness in Nigeria’s electoral system. The party further claimed the move could undermine opposition activities and public confidence in democratic institutions.

The ADC also warned that such actions could weaken electoral accountability and erode trust in institutions responsible for safeguarding democracy. It described the situation as part of broader concerns about impartiality in the country’s political process.

Beyond INEC, the party criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), blaming it for worsening economic hardship, including rising fuel prices, electricity challenges, naira depreciation, and poverty. Despite its grievances, the ADC said it remains determined to emerge as a strong opposition force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
