A fledgling Japanese political party announced Tuesday it will appoint an artificial intelligence system as its new leader, following the resignation of its founder after disappointing election results.
The Path to Rebirth party was created in January by Shinji Ishimaru, a former mayor from western Japan. The group has no formal policy platform, allowing members to pursue their own agendas.
Ishimaru rose to national prominence after a surprise second-place finish in the 2024 Tokyo gubernatorial race, driven largely by an online campaign.
However, the party struggled to build on that momentum and failed to secure any seats in this year’s upper house elections. Ishimaru stepped down shortly afterward.
The party said the move to install an AI leader reflects its aim to break with traditional political structures and experiment with new forms of governance.
Details about how the AI will function as party head, or how it will interact with members and voters, have not yet been disclosed.
Political analysts note that while AI is increasingly used in campaigning and data analysis, appointing it as a formal party leader is unprecedented in Japan.
The development comes at a time when Japanese voters are expressing growing dissatisfaction with mainstream political parties, creating space for unconventional experiments in the political arena.
It remains unclear whether the decision will boost the Path to Rebirth’s standing or further marginalize it in Japan’s competitive political landscape.
