The man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk appeared to take responsibility for the shooting in messages posted on Discord, the platform has confirmed. Tyler Robinson, 22, allegedly wrote in a group chat hours before his arrest that he was behind the attack at Utah Valley University.
Robinson was arrested last week on suspicion of aggravated murder, firearm discharge, and obstruction of justice. He is expected in court on Tuesday and could face the death penalty if convicted. Utah Governor Spencer Cox said Robinson admitted the shooting to his father before surrendering.
Law enforcement sources told CBS News that Robinson’s Discord group chat included more than 20 people, where he was questioned by friends about the shooting and did not deny involvement. In one message, he reportedly wrote: “It was me at UVU yesterday. I’m sorry for all of this.” Discord said its investigation found no evidence he planned or promoted violence on the platform.
The attack on Kirk, 31, occurred during a Turning Point USA event on Wednesday. He was shot in the neck and died, sparking outrage across political lines. Vigils have since been held in the U.S. and abroad.
Investigators are still working to determine Robinson’s motive. Cox has claimed the suspect was “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology,” though records list him as previously unaffiliated with any party. His parents are registered Republicans.
FBI Director Kash Patel said texts on Robinson’s phone showed he intended to target Kirk. Meanwhile, officials are examining his social media activity and whether anyone knew about or encouraged the shooting.
Kirk, a strong ally of Donald Trump, was known for promoting gun rights, opposing abortion, and criticizing LGBTQ+ and Muslim communities. His group, Turning Point USA, focused on advancing conservative ideas on college campuses and mobilizing young Republican voters.
