All Progressives Congress Governors Clash Over NWC Positions

Date:

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress are reportedly locked in disagreements over the sharing of key positions in the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), with zoning arrangements and calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections driving the dispute.

Sources within the party said the Progressives Governors’ Forum has held at least two closed-door meetings in Abuja to resolve the issue, but the sessions ended without agreement as governors continue to jostle for influence over strategic party offices.

The main areas of contention include the positions of Deputy National Chairman (North), National Organising Secretary, National Publicity Secretary and Deputy National Publicity Secretary, which are considered crucial for managing delegate lists, party primaries and media messaging ahead of the 2027 polls.

Zoning tensions have also emerged among geopolitical blocs. While the North West is pushing for greater representation in the NWC, the North Central—currently producing the party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda—is insisting on maintaining the existing arrangement.

Meanwhile, we remember the  party has inaugurated a National Central Coordinating Committee for its 2026 convention at the party secretariat in Abuja, chaired by former Katsina governor Aminu Bello Masari. However, insiders say internal lobbying by governors continues, while President Bola Tinubu has so far allowed the governors to handle the dispute within the party.
