The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has confirmed that all children and staff abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic Schools, Papiri in Niger State, have been rescued and reunited with their families.
Rev. Bulus Yohanna, Proprietor of St. Mary Catholic Private Primary and Secondary School, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, noting that a total of 230 people—including 12 staff, 14 students, and 204 pupils—were abducted and later recovered through the efforts of federal and state authorities, alongside security agencies.
He confirmed that no child remains missing and that all rescued individuals have returned safely to their families.
The abduction occurred on November 21, when an initial headcount showed 315 persons unaccounted for. By November 23, 50 individuals had escaped and returned home, reducing the number of missing persons to 265.
A joint verification by state authorities, security agencies, and school officials later revealed further adjustments. Some parents were absent during the initial checks, and additional pupils had either not been abducted or had escaped earlier.
Following a second and final verification in collaboration with the Parents-Teachers Association, the confirmed number of abductees was established at 230.
Rev. Yohanna explained that initial discrepancies were due to the chaotic nature of the incident, noting that some pupils had fled into nearby bushes and parents were not present during verification exercises.
He emphasised that the miscounts were unintentional and reflected the challenges of managing a fast-evolving, emotionally charged situation.
The clergyman expressed gratitude to government officials, security personnel, parents, the Christian community, the media, and the public for their prayers, patience, and support throughout the ordeal.
He concluded by praying for healing and restoration for all families affected by the abduction.
