At least a dozen people, including members of the Community Watch Corps (CWC), local vigilantes, and civilians, were killed on Wednesday when armed bandits stormed Gidan Gona village in Tafoki district, Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The violent raid, which occurred in broad daylight, triggered a heavy exchange of gunfire between the attackers and local security operatives. According to security sources, the firefight resulted in multiple fatalities on both sides, with several others left wounded.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen, riding motorcycles and heavily armed, invaded the village at about 2 p.m. and opened fire indiscriminately. In response, local vigilante groups and members of the CWC engaged the assailants in a bid to repel the attack and protect residents. Despite their efforts, several operatives and villagers lost their lives in the gun duel.
The bandits, after unleashing terror on the community, abducted an undisclosed number of residents, including women and children. They reportedly retreated into the surrounding forest with their captives before reinforcements could arrive.
A post by a known security analyst, Bakatsine, on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), confirmed the incident. “Yesterday afternoon, bandits attacked Gidan Gona village in Tafoki district, Faskari LGA, Katsina State. A fierce gun battle with Vigilantes and CWC left several operatives and civilians dead, some injured and many abducted,” the post read.
The attack marks yet another deadly incident in a region plagued by persistent insecurity, where armed banditry and kidnapping for ransom have become rampant. Katsina State, like several parts of northwestern Nigeria, has witnessed escalating violence in rural communities, prompting ongoing security operations and the formation of community defense groups.
Residents of Gidan Gona and surrounding areas have called on both state and federal authorities to intensify security presence and proactive measures to prevent further bloodshed.
As of Thursday evening, the Katsina State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement regarding the number of casualties or those abducted. However, community sources say a search operation is underway to track the attackers and possibly rescue the kidnapped victims.
The tragic development has once again raised concerns over the safety of rural populations and the adequacy of local security structures to confront well-armed criminal elements.
Efforts to reach local government officials for comments on support measures for affected families were unsuccessful as of press time.
The latest attack underscores the urgent need for sustained military and intelligence support in vulnerable communities across Katsina and neighboring states. Residents continue to live in fear as insecurity disrupts daily life and economic activities.
