Former England striker Gary Lineker believes Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes this season hinge heavily on new signing Viktor Gyökeres delivering immediately.
The Gunners signed the 27-year-old forward from Sporting CP this summer in a deal worth up to £63 million. Gyökeres enjoyed a prolific campaign last season, scoring 54 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker said the Swedish striker must replicate that level of form for Arsenal to mount a serious challenge.
“A lot will depend on how Gyökeres does. He scored a terrific goal in pre-season, but we all know pre-season is not that important—although, for a striker, it helps to get that feeling of hitting the back of the net,” Lineker explained. “We know he’ll get good service, so I think they could go close again.”
