“Reject Israeli Deal, It’s Blood Money” MURIC to FG

Date:

In Abuja, Nigeria, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the Nigerian government to suspend all diplomatic and business engagements with the State of Israel, warning that continued cooperation could damage Nigeria’s moral standing and invite public outrage.

In a statement released Tuesday by its Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC argued that Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza have caused the deaths of thousands of civilians, including women and children. The group described the situation as a humanitarian catastrophe, accusing Israel of violating international law and basic human rights.

“Nigeria must not be seen as condoning oppression,” Akintola said. “Partnering with Israel at this time is equivalent to ignoring the cries of innocent victims in Gaza.”

MURIC’s comments come days after reports emerged of growing bilateral talks between Nigeria and Israel, particularly in areas of agriculture, technology, and security. While government officials have yet to confirm any new agreements, the perceived warming of relations has sparked debates within diplomatic and religious circles.

A Call for Moral Leadership

According to MURIC, Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous country and a key voice in the Muslim world, has a responsibility to “stand on the side of justice” and align with nations calling for an immediate ceasefire. The group urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use Nigeria’s diplomatic influence to push for peace, rather than deepen economic ties with Israel.

“History will not be kind to any leader who prioritizes trade deals over human lives,” the statement read.

The Wider Context

The Gaza conflict, which reignited after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, has since escalated into one of the most intense wars in recent Middle Eastern history. The United Nations estimates that over 30,000 Palestinians have been killed, and global protests have continued to demand an end to the hostilities.

Countries such as South Africa, Turkey, and Malaysia have either suspended or downgraded relations with Israel in response to the war. MURIC believes Nigeria should follow suit to maintain its credibility as a moral and peace-seeking nation.

Government Silence So Far

As of press time, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not issued a statement responding to MURIC’s call. However, diplomatic insiders suggest that Nigeria’s relationship with Israel remains “strategic,” particularly in sectors like agricultural technology, which Israel has heavily invested in across Africa.

For now, MURIC’s warning adds a fresh layer of pressure on the Tinubu administration as it navigates the delicate balance between economic partnerships and moral diplomacy in a highly polarized global climate.
