The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (ASUU-MOAUM), has condemned the recent killings in Yelwata, Benue State, and called on security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible.
The union’s statement follows a deadly attack reportedly carried out by suspected armed herders two weekends ago in Yelwata, where about 200 people were killed in what has been described as a coordinated assault.
In a joint statement released on Tuesday, ASUU-MOAUM Chairperson Comrade Ali Sule Ako and Secretary Comrade Daniel Chile described the incident as tragic and called for immediate government action to deliver justice to the victims and affected communities.
The union expressed concern over the frequency of such attacks in Benue, warning that continued violence threatens not only lives but also food security in the region and the country at large.
ASUU-MOAUM urged both federal and state governments to uphold their constitutional obligation to protect all citizens, especially those in vulnerable and rural areas frequently targeted by attackers.
It also called on security agencies to respond with urgency, professionalism, and impartiality to prevent further violence and ensure accountability for the Yelwata massacre.
“The perpetrators must be tracked down and prosecuted without delay,” the union said.
The union also extended its solidarity to the families and communities affected by the attack, emphasizing the need for humanitarian relief and long-term resettlement solutions.
ASUU-MOAUM called for the implementation of effective support programs to assist displaced residents in safely returning and rebuilding their communities.
It concluded by stressing that restoring peace and justice in Benue is critical to national stability and food production.
