    Orientation Course For 2025 Batch ‘B’ Begins

    The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Stream II orientation course will begin nationwide on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.

    In a statement released on its official Facebook page on Monday, the scheme said registration would continue until midnight on Friday, September 26, with the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for the same day. The three-week programme will close on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

    However, the NYSC clarified that the Kwara State orientation camp would open later than others, running from Tuesday, September 30 to Monday, October 20, 2025.

    The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, urged all prospective corps members to report to the camps indicated on their call-up letters and comply strictly with registration requirements. He emphasized that foreign-trained graduates must present their international passports alongside original versions of uploaded documents.

    Nafiu warned against presenting fake credentials, stressing that offenders would be handed over to law enforcement agencies. He also noted that graduates of polytechnics and monotechnics must produce their National Diploma certificates.

    For those who misplace their call-up letters, the NYSC directed that graduates who collected theirs from institutions should obtain a police report and sworn affidavit before returning to their schools, while those who printed online can simply reprint copies.

    Highlighting security measures, the DG cautioned corps members against night travel. He advised them to stop journeys once it is 6:00 p.m. and lodge at the nearest military or police barracks, NYSC secretariat, or corps lodge. Members were also urged to use only government-approved motor parks and transportation companies.

    He further explained that married, pregnant, and nursing mothers posted outside their husbands’ states of residence may be allowed to complete the orientation course in their states of domicile, provided they show proof of marriage and residence.

    All prospective corps members must present original call-up letters, statements of results or certificates, school identity cards, and certificates of medical fitness issued by government or military hospitals stamped by the Nigerian Medical Association. Medical and allied health graduates are also expected to show evidence of professional registration.

    Nafiu concluded by wishing all participants safe travels and a successful service year.

    First-Ever 5km Race Set for Ile-Ife Olojo Festival

    Organizers of the inaugural Olojo Festival 5km Road Race have promised a world-class sporting event this week in Ile-Ife, the historic heart of Yoruba land. The race coincides with the annual Olojo Festival, celebrating Ogun, the god of iron and war, and the mythical first day of creation in Yoruba cosmology.

    The event marks the first road race officially recognized by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria to run alongside a major cultural festival. It aims to empower youth, promote healthy living, and expand the festival’s cultural offerings.

    Race Director Tony Osheku, a former Nigerian distance running champion, said the 5km distance was chosen to ensure inclusivity, allowing both elite and amateur runners to participate. “Road races generate excitement and attract spectators, sponsors, and tourists, boosting local businesses and hospitality,” Osheku added.

    The initiative was conceived by Sooko Adeleke Odewade in partnership with the Alade’fa Athletic Family Initiative and has the endorsement of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.

    Odewade emphasized the race’s long-term vision, explaining that it will identify raw talent while providing coaching, mentorship, and scholarship opportunities after the race. “We want to help these young ones become world-class athletes and create role models whose success inspires others,” he said.

    Osheku lauded Odewade’s dedication, noting the support of the Alade’fa family, which has produced top Nigerian athletes, including Taiwo Aladefa, a high hurdler and African Games champion.

    Participants will receive certificates of participation, with special cash prizes for category winners.

    An official from the Alade’fa Initiative described the race as “more than a competition; it is an investment in youth, health, and the cultural soul of our community.”

    The Olojo Festival 5km Road Race is set to enhance the festival experience while promoting sports development and cultural pride in Ile-Ife.

    El-Rufai Criticised Over Alleged Tinubu Power Extension Plot

    Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has criticised former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over comments suggesting that President Bola Tinubu intends to extend his stay in power beyond constitutional limits.

    In a post on his X handle, Onanuga described El-Rufai’s claims as baseless and unfounded, accusing the former governor of attempting to discredit the President. He said El-Rufai had become unsettled by the massive reception Tinubu received in Kaduna, which contradicted his claim that the North had abandoned the President.

    “Former Governor El-Rufai appears to need some help, especially given his recent unfounded claims and speculations about President Tinubu,” Onanuga wrote. “It is increasingly evident that he has recognised the futility of attempts by his associates in his new party to prevent the President’s likely re-election in 2027. This plot is proving to be unattainable, a mission doomed to fail.”

    The presidential aide added that contrary to what he described as El-Rufai’s “hallucinations,” President Tinubu remains a democrat who will not stay in office beyond May 28, 2031, should he win a second term in 2027.

    Onanuga also urged Kaduna State governor, Uba Sani, to engage his predecessor, suggesting that El-Rufai may benefit from “professional counselling” to move away from what he called “political fabrications and absurd speculations.”

    He maintained that the Kaduna rally was proof that Tinubu continues to enjoy strong support in the North, dismissing suggestions of waning popularity.

    PDP Unveils Sub-Committees for 2025 National Convention

    The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has released the names of members appointed to various sub-committees ahead of its 2025 Elective National Convention, scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, from November 15 to 16.

    The announcement was made TODAY through the party’s official X account and signed by the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Adamawa State Governor, Umaru Fintiri.

    According to the statement, the convention will elect new national officers, with over 100 members drawn into sub-committees covering accreditation, security, logistics, electoral processes, and other functions.

    Key committees are chaired by prominent PDP governors, senators, and party stalwarts. The Accommodation Committee is chaired by Governor Ademola Adeleke, with Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo as deputy and Alhaji Gamboa Gade as secretary. Accreditation will be led by Governor Dauda Lawal, assisted by Ashamu Abantekewei and Umar Bature.

    Governor Douye Diri chairs the Contact and Mobilisation Committee, with Senator Abba Moro as deputy and Emmanuel Ekpe as secretary. The Constitutional Amendment Committee is chaired by former Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel, with Barr. Mark Jacob and Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN, serving as deputy and secretary, respectively.

    The Electoral Sub-Committee is headed by Governor Fintiri, with Adeleke as deputy chairman and Dr. Okereke Ipeazu as secretary. Entertainment and Welfare will be chaired by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, supported by Hajiya Hassana Dikro and Mrs. Amina Darasimi.

    Former Senate President Bukola Saraki leads the Medical Sub-Committee, with Jumoke Akinjide as deputy and Dr. Josephine Ugeh as secretary. Dr. Agbo Emmanuel will chair the Monitoring and Evaluation Sub-Committee, alongside Senator Tajudeen Abbas and Dr. Edward Aje.

    Other key committees include Protocol, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang; Publicity, chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed; Security, headed by Governor Kefas Agbu; and Transportation, chaired by Governor Seyi Makinde. The Venue Committee will be led by Oyo State’s Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal.

    The PDP said the appointments reflect its commitment to ensuring a smooth and transparent convention that will usher in a new leadership team.

    A frontline pro-Tinubu group, Renewed Hope Ambassadors, has intensified grassroots mobilisation efforts to secure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

    The group’s Public Relations Officer, Ambassador Samuel Ojli Michael, made the appeal at the weekend during a courtesy visit to the District Head of Galadimawa community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), His Royal Highness Musa Barde.

    Michael said Nigerians should “double their support” for Tinubu, citing what he described as the President’s visionary and strategic leadership since assuming office more than two years ago.

    He argued that Tinubu’s administration had delivered significant progress in economic recovery, industrialisation, and infrastructural development, particularly in the FCT.

    The Renewed Hope Ambassadors, which has been active in grassroots campaigns, said it is working to ensure Tinubu remains in Aso Rock to continue his policies beyond 2027.

    The group also used the visit to seek the traditional ruler’s endorsement. In response, District Head Musa Barde assured the delegation of his support.

    “You’ve gladdened my heart with your visit and message,” Barde said. “We are solidly together on this project, and my kingdom will support Renewed Hope in 2027. We cannot jump ship when the current administration is developing our communities and improving lives.”

    The event was attended by the Council of Chiefs, community leaders, youth and women’s groups, and other stakeholders.

    South-North Forum Backs Southern Presidency in 2027

    The South-North Progressive Forum (SNPF) has called on political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to zone their presidential tickets to the South in 2027 in the interest of national unity and stability.

    Chairman of the group, Comrade Festus Onyekwulisi, said zoning the presidency to the South would correct historic imbalances and strengthen cohesion across the country. He noted that since independence, the North has held the presidency for about 24 years, compared to 18 years for the South.

    “This is not about mere politics, it is about national integration, equity, justice, and fairness,” Onyekwulisi said. “Our vision is a Nigeria where no group dominates, but where every section has a genuine sense of belonging.”

    Comrade Onyekwulisi explained that the SNPF is building a grassroots mobilisation network to ensure broad support for a Southern presidency. He revealed that coordinators have already been appointed in over 30,000 communities across the country, with a target of galvanising at least 10 million votes in 2027.

    To tackle voter apathy and electoral malpractice, he said the group is conducting sensitisation programmes and warned politicians against exploiting insecurity, hunger, or ethnic and religious sentiments in the coming election.

    The SNPF also introduced what it called “Rightful Defection,” a concept allowing non-partisan members to support any Southern candidate of their choice, regardless of party affiliation, as long as competence and equity are upheld.

    Onyekwulisi added that the forum is not merely pushing advocacy but is determined to reshape the political landscape by ensuring equity guides the 2027 contest.

    Rep. Gagdi Rejects Mutfwang’s Call for State Police

    Despite repeated appeals from Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for the creation of state police, a federal lawmaker, Yusuf Gagdi, has strongly opposed the idea, warning it could be abused by state governors.

    Federal lawmaker Yusuf Gagdi, who represents Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, restated his opposition during a visit to some attacked and displaced communities in Kanam today. He argued that state police would likely be weaponized against political opponents rather than used to secure lives and property.

    The lawmaker acknowledged the rising insecurity in his constituency, including recent attacks by armed bandits in Garga, Kukawa, Kyaram, Gyambau, Dungur and Shuwaka communities. However, he insisted that creating another security force would not address Plateau’s recurring violence.

    He called for more funding and better accountability for conventional security agencies, including the police, military and Department of State Services (DSS). According to him, adequately resourced security outfits would be more effective than introducing state-controlled forces.

    Gagdi further urged the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify operations in forests along the Plateau, Taraba and Bauchi borders, which he said have become hideouts for criminal elements.

    A member of the National Assembly, Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, has raised the alarm over a fraudulent Facebook account created in his name to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

    Alli, who represents Oyo South Senatorial District under the All Progressives Congress (APC), disclosed the development in a statement issued by his media office on Sunday.

    The senator cautioned his constituents and the general public not to engage with the fake account or respond to any solicitations.

    “We strongly advise the public not to engage in any transaction or communication with anyone on social media platforms, particularly Facebook, Messenger, or any other similar channels, claiming to represent Senator Alli,” the statement read.

    He emphasized that he does not solicit funds, personal information, or business dealings through social media and warned that any such requests are fraudulent.

    Alli further urged anyone with information about the impostor to report immediately to the nearest police station for appropriate action.

    Nigeria’s 2027 Polls Threatened by Early Campaigning

    With nearly two years until the 2027 presidential election, political activity has intensified across Nigeria, sparking concerns over widespread violations of the Electoral Act. The law prohibits campaigns until 150 days before polling day, but parties and individuals have already begun open and subtle campaigning.

    Many Nigerians fear that governance is being neglected as politicians shift focus to electioneering. Critics also fault the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the police for failing to enforce existing laws, despite their constitutional roles in regulating party activities and prosecuting offenders.

    INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu recently described the situation as a “disturbing trend” at a stakeholders’ roundtable in Abuja. He cited instances of rallies, billboards, and media campaigns promoting candidates ahead of official timelines. Yakubu warned that early campaigning undermines efforts to track campaign finance, as large sums are being spent outside regulated periods.

    Although Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 bans campaigns earlier than 150 days before elections, Yakubu acknowledged that the law carries no penalties for early breaches. He said this loophole makes enforcement difficult, though the Act prescribes fines for campaigning within 24 hours of polling.

    The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of being the main offender. Civil society groups, including the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), have demanded urgent sanctions, warning that early campaigns could compromise the 2027 elections.

    In a letter to INEC, SERAP insisted the commission was not powerless. It urged Yakubu to identify and prosecute violators, citing sections of the Constitution and Electoral Act that empower INEC to regulate and sanction political parties. The group threatened legal action if no action is taken.

    SERAP also warned that state governors were diverting public funds, including savings from fuel subsidy removal, to finance premature campaigns instead of addressing pressing socio-economic needs. It argued that prolonged electioneering threatens economic development and entrenches impunity.

    Calls are mounting for INEC and the National Assembly to close existing legal gaps and for security agencies to enforce the law. Without decisive measures, stakeholders fear that premature campaigning could further weaken Nigeria’s democratic process.
