Bala Mohammed Defects from PDP to APM, Eyes 2027 Senate Bid

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Allied Peoples Movement, following weeks of political consultations and speculation over his future.

Mohammed made the announcement on Saturday at the Government House in Bauchi, citing ongoing crises within the Peoples Democratic Party as a key reason for his decision.

He had previously described the PDP as “headless,” warning that internal divisions could weaken the party ahead of future elections.

Reacting earlier to the Supreme Court judgment on the PDP leadership dispute, the governor said the ruling did not give any faction full control of the party, noting that neither his camp nor that of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike emerged victorious.

“We have succeeded in ensuring that no single individual hijacks the party,” he said, adding that the party’s Board of Trustees would temporarily manage its affairs pending a caretaker committee.

In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Mohammed said he respected the court’s decision but stressed that it was “not a victory for anyone.”

He also accused Wike of working against the PDP, alleging links with the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Explaining his defection, Mohammed said the move was necessary to secure a stable political platform for his supporters ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting that consultations had been ongoing before joining the APM.

He further confirmed his intention to contest the Bauchi South senatorial seat in 2027, saying his political future remains focused on continued service.
