Kwankwaso Begins Mass Exit From ADC Support Base

Date:

Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has reportedly directed his supporters to resign from the African Democratic Congress ahead of his anticipated defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress next week.

The development follows a resignation letter by a key Kwankwasiyya Movement member in Dala Local Government Area, Kano State, Kabiru Adamu Abdullahi, who announced his exit from the ADC, citing instructions from the movement’s leadership.

In the letter dated May 1, 2026, and addressed to his ward chairman, Abdullahi confirmed his immediate withdrawal from the party.

“I sincerely appreciate the opportunity given to me to be part of the party and wish you and the party the very best,” he said.

In a separate social media statement, Abdullahi linked his resignation to Kwankwaso’s directive to loyalists to prepare for a political realignment.

A Kwankwasiyya leader, Shehu Wada Sagagi, was quoted as saying the move to the NDC was taken after careful consideration of what he described as emerging legal risks surrounding the ADC.

“In his wisdom, our leader and the Movement agreed that going to the NDC is the best option because there are more dangerous legal threats against the ADC. We must look for a way out,” he said.

Kwankwaso is reportedly expected to move to the NDC alongside Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, amid growing speculation of a possible political alliance ahead of future elections.

According to Daily Trust, Obi is also expected to announce his defection soon, with both politicians rumoured to be positioning for a joint presidential ticket, although this remains unconfirmed.

The reported political realignment has continued to generate discussion within opposition circles, as parties brace for possible shifts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
