Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Colombian international Luis Diaz from Liverpool in a deal reportedly worth up to €75 million ($86.5 million), making it the third-most expensive transfer in the Bundesliga club’s history.
The 28-year-old winger has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at the Allianz Arena until 2029. Diaz arrives from Anfield having won the Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cups during his stint with the English champions.
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen praised the acquisition, stating, “In Luis Diaz, we have succeeded in bringing in one of the best left-wingers in the Premier League. He brings real player character from Liverpool to FC Bayern — he’s won silverware with every one of his clubs to date.”
Diaz, who joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022, expressed his excitement about the move. “It means a lot to me to be part of FC Bayern,” he said. “They’re one of the biggest clubs in the world. My goal is to win every possible title, and that’s what we’ll work for every day as a team.”
During the 2023/24 season, Diaz scored 17 goals and provided eight assists across 50 appearances in all competitions, with 13 of those goals coming in the Premier League. He was Liverpool’s second-highest scorer behind Mohamed Salah.
His arrival comes at a crucial time for Bayern, who are dealing with the long-term injury of Jamal Musiala and the departures of Thomas Müller and Leroy Sane. Diaz will join up with Vincent Kompany’s squad immediately and could make his debut in a friendly against Lyon on Saturday.
On social media, Diaz thanked Liverpool fans, saying he would “treasure forever” his time at the club and leaves “proud of everything we achieved together.”
