Nollywood actress Biodun Okeowo, popularly known as Omoborty, has advised the public to set boundaries when helping others, warning against sacrificing personal well-being in the process.
In a post shared on Instagram, Okeowo recounted a recent conversation with a colleague in the entertainment industry who revealed he had received over 560 requests for assistance in his direct messages (DMs).
The situation, she said, made her reflect on her own experiences of giving away money intended for personal use to assist others. She cautioned that while helping others is commendable, it should not come at the expense of one’s own needs.
“Help, but not at your own detriment,” she wrote. “If you respond to every touching story, one day you’ll become a touching story too.”
Okeowo also criticized the pressure placed on public figures to offer constant support, noting that many who applaud acts of generosity are often the first to criticize when financial difficulties arise.
“People will ask, ‘What did you even do with your money when you had it?’” she added.
The actress emphasized that everyone is dealing with their own responsibilities and financial burdens. She urged people not to guilt-trip others into providing assistance, especially when they may not be in a position to help.
“There are too many fake stories out there, and it’s hard to tell who’s genuine,” she wrote. “Still, one person cannot help everybody.”
She concluded her message with a prayer for future generations to experience ease and comfort, encouraging people to help where they can but also to prioritize their own well-being.
Okeowo’s comments have resonated widely on social media, drawing attention to the emotional and financial pressures faced by celebrities and public figures.
