Breaking…Senate confirms appointments of new Service Chiefs

Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointments of new Service Chiefs as requested by President Bola Tinubu.

The new Service Chiefs are Maj. Gen. Christopher Musa – Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen. Tahoreed Lagbaja – Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla – Chief of Naval Staff, Air Vice Marshal Halidu Abubakar – Chief of Air Staff.

Confirmation of their appointments  followed screenings by senators in the Committee of the Whole for over two hours in closed doors session.

The Service Chiefs, it was learnt briefed the upper legislative chamber on the strategies they have in stock to tackle insecurity across the country.

Upon arrival in the Red Chamber, the Service Chiefs were given two minutes each to introduce themselves before the screening exercise went into closed session because of security reason.

The Senate had earlier suspended relevant rules to allow the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Abdullahi Gumel  to bring them into the chamber.

It would be recalled that President Tinubu had on Tuesday, July 9 asked the Senate to confirm the appointment of the new Service Chiefs.

He made the request in a letter dated July 5, 2023, and addressed to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, which he read on the floor of the Red Chamber at plenary.

President Tinubu, had on Monday, June 19 approved the immediate retirement of all former Service Chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, Advisers, and the Comptroller-General of Customs Service and subsequently appoints new Service Chiefs.

The new appointments, according to Tinubu were in compliance with Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act. Cap A20 Laws the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
