CAF Postpones 2026 WAFCON in Morocco Until July Over Unforeseen Issues

Date:

The Confederation of African Football (Confederation of African Football) has postponed the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco just two weeks before kick-off, citing unforeseen circumstances.

Originally scheduled for March 17 to April 3, 2026, the tournament will now hold from July 25 to August 16, 2026, according to a statement from CAF. The competition also serves as Africa’s qualifying pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

CAF said the decision followed consultations with stakeholders, including FIFA, to ensure proper organisation and long-term success of the tournament. Despite the delay, organisers expressed confidence that preparations remain on track.

Hosting rights for the 2026 edition were awarded to Morocco in October 2024. Defending champions Nigeria, who won the last edition also hosted by Morocco, are drawn in Group C alongside Zambia, Malawi and Egypt.

The Nigerian team, the Nigeria women’s national football team, are targeting a strong finish under Coach Justin Madugu to secure qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
