The Kwara State Government has again reiterated its commitment to mitigate the effect of climate change on the people of the State, to reduce its hazards and enhance a safe and condusive environment.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman revealed this during the week, at the inauguration of the State Inter-Ministerial Committee on Climate Change (KWAICCC), held at the conference room of the Ministry.
” Considering the impacts of Climate Change on the people and environment, there is need to constitute a Committee for policy and decision makers across relevant MDAs to identify and discuss Climate Change impacts and the entry points for mainstreaming adaptation into policy and sectoral planning of the state.”
The Commissioner further explained that the committee is charged with responsibilities to provide a communication link between government and the entire community as well as an advise on how to work with and overcome barriers to implementation.
“Also, to identify and take action on emerging issues and opportunities in Climate Change and assist with funding opportunities and grant applications respectively,” he added
Mallam Ndanusa therefore enjoined the committee to see their call to duty as an opportunity to serve and contribute to the development of Kwara State.
In her remark, the Permanent Secretary, Hajia Afusat Ibrahim appreciated the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for prioritising the welfare of Kwarans, therefore assured the committee of government’s support in the task ahead.
