The former vice-president’s company reportedly sent the people away as part of a restructuring exercise that they embarked upon – Intel says it may not be unconnected to the economic situation in the country presently Premium Times is reporting that Nigeria’s former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has authorised the sack of 120 workers, about 50 per cent of his staff.
The workers who were on the payroll of Gotel Communication, broadcasting the only private radio and television stations in Nigeria’s terrorism-ravaged north east as Mohammed Yahaya, the company’s head of administration, asked all the staff to check the admin and accounts. The memo read: “This is to inform all staff that the restructuring exercise embarked upon by Gotel Communication has commenced.
“All staff are therefore enjoined to check with administration department to their letters and entitlements from the accounts department after clearance.” Consequently, the 24-hour service offered by the communication outfit both on television and radio has been reduced to only 19 hours daily.
The former vice president was also said to have conducted the same exercise in Adama Beverage Limited which produces Faro water and juice.
After the state government in Adamawa, the Turakin Adamawa is the second highest employer of labour in the state with the American University of Nigeria and Rico Gado feed mill factory as part of his investments.
About two weeks ago, Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, also reportedly fired 48 members of staff.
The company, Dangote Group, owned by the business mogul, sacked 36 expatriate and 12 Nigerian workers from the group’s headquarters and one of the subsidiaries, Dangote Cement Plc.
According to a report by Punch newspaper, the sack of the workers was not unconnected with the current high cost of running business in the country occasioned by the unavailability of foreign exchange and the unprecedented hike in the naira to dollar exchange rate.
