Veteran journalist and publisher, Dele Momodu, has voiced his preference for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to emerge as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election.

Momodu Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday,  said Atiku remains the most formidable candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu, citing his political experience, personal investments, and wide support base, especially in Northern Nigeria.

The publisher emphasized that politics is a “game of numbers,” adding that Atiku’s consistent political presence since 1993, without reliance on state governors or political thugs, sets him apart. “He’s been running his business, investing in education and agriculture. For me, this is a good example of what a leader should be,” he said.

He argued that criticisms against Atiku suggest he is a serious threat to the ruling establishment. He also referenced recent calls by political figures, including Daniel Bwala, for Atiku to join their respective camps, reinforcing the perception of Atiku’s political weight.

On the broader opposition landscape, Momodu urged a democratic process in selecting a consensus candidate. While expressing respect for Labour Party’s Peter Obi and former Minister Rotimi Amaechi, he called on all camps to campaign freely. “Let all Obidients campaign for Obi, those for Atiku and Amaechi should also campaign. Let the best candidate emerge democratically,” he said.

Momodu clarified that his stance does not oppose other candidates, including Obi, whom he described as a “very good friend.” Instead, he stressed the importance of unity and fair competition within any emerging coalition.

He concluded by expressing optimism that the opposition coalition is taking shape and will be better positioned to contest the 2027 election effectively.
