The Delta State Police Command has arrested more than 80 individuals in the past month for crimes ranging from armed robbery to drug trafficking, seizing firearms, stolen vehicles, and electronics in the process.
Speaking at a press briefing in Asaba on Wednesday, Commissioner of Police CP Abaniwonda Olufemi said intelligence-led operations across Asaba, Ughelli, Ogwashi-Uku, and surrounding communities have strengthened the state’s fight against crime.
“Deltans can attest that the state has recently become hostile for criminals,” Olufemi said. “Our mandate to pursue and bring offenders to justice remains unwavering.”
The operations recovered 31 firearms, 86 rounds of ammunition, motorcycles, vehicles, laptops, mobile phones, and other household electronics. A 35-year-old Edo State man was arrested while attempting to sell vehicles for N2 million each, and a 52-year-old woman in Ughelli, described as a major drug dealer, was apprehended with her associates.
During an August 29 raid in Afisere, Ughelli, officers seized 355 bottles of codeine, hundreds of rolls of tramadol, and Canadian liquid cannabis. Olufemi also reported the disruption of a fraud syndicate that used hypnotism to defraud victims, recovering over ₦23.5 million, two Toyota Camry cars, and 16 suspected stolen iPhones.
The Delta operations follow a similar crackdown in Nasarawa State, where nine suspects were arrested and 4,264 rounds of ammunition recovered. State Police Commissioner Shetima Mohammed described the arrests as a “major breakthrough” in dismantling criminal networks and ensuring community safety.
