Federal Government Unveils N10.1bn Plan to Combat Out-of-School Children in Nigeria

Date:

The Federal Government has invested N10.1 billion in the education sector in the last quarter of 2025 to reduce out-of-school children, improve school security and strengthen skills acquisition across the country. Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, said the intervention aligns with the administration’s six-point agenda under the Nigerian Education Sector Renewed Initiative aimed at building human capital and repositioning the sector for national development.

A significant portion of the funds was directed to technical and vocational education. According to the minister, N2.97 billion was disbursed as stipends to 160,000 vocational students, while N4.6 billion was used to upgrade skills training centres under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme to expand access to practical skills for the labour market.

The government also launched a N2.55 billion menstrual health campaign targeting girls in rural and underserved communities. The initiative will distribute more than one million sanitary pads to about 370,000 girls to reduce absenteeism linked to poor menstrual hygiene and improve retention rates in schools.

On security, the ministry is establishing a dedicated school safety department to strengthen protection infrastructure nationwide. The minister said security agencies are working continuously to safeguard schools, noting progress in ongoing operations against insurgents.

He added that the ministry is collaborating with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps through a real-time school tracking system. The platform has registered 15,000 schools and captured data on 141,000 geolocated schools through the ministry’s digital monitoring system to enhance coordinated security response.
