FG to reform civil service disciplinary system for efficiency

Date:

The Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), Prof. Tunji Olaopa, has called for a comprehensive review of the disciplinary control system in Nigeria’s civil service to promote culture change, value reorientation, and timely resolution of disciplinary cases.

A statement issued on Tuesday by the commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Taiwo Hassan, said Olaopa made the call at a one-day joint retreat between the FCSC and the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF).

Olaopa noted that the review would help address delays in handling disciplinary matters and foster accountability within the system. He described the relationship between the FCSC and the OHCSF as that of “Siamese twins,” given their shared responsibilities in implementing policies, enforcing regulations, and providing leadership in the public service.

He stressed the need to strengthen collaboration and communication between the two bodies to prevent misunderstandings, build trust, and enhance efficiency.

The FCSC chairman also highlighted the importance of linking merit-based recruitment, competency-driven human resource practices, and performance management with the wage structure, saying such integration was essential to restore the government’s image as an “employer of choice.”

Speaking earlier, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan (represented by Esther Walson-Jack), commended Olaopa’s commitment to reform and described the retreat as a renewed effort to deepen cooperation in the civil service.

The call for reform comes amid growing concerns about bureaucratic bottlenecks, delayed investigations, and weak accountability in the Nigerian public service.
