FG urged to address ASUU’s plight

The Federal Government has been urged to consider every measure towards addressing the concerns of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in order to prevent persistent industrial disharmony in the nation’s university system.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, stated this while featuring on “Talk to the Vice-Chancellor” on UNILORIN 89.3 FM, the official radio station of the University of Ilorin.

The VC acknowledged the fact that the salaries and general conditions of service of university workers, particularly academic staff, are generally insufficient and rated among the least worldwide.

He urged ASUU to explore other means of drawing attention of the government and other stakeholders to its areas of needs rather than going on industrial action at the slightest provocation, saying that students are often those that suffer needlessly from strikes.

The Vice-Chancellor, who thanked donor agencies for the various supports the University had received since he assumed the position of the Chief Executive of the institution, said that he would continue to do his best at attracting more supports for the growth and development of the University.
