At least six people have died and nine others sustained serious injuries in a motor accident at Ibeju Bus Stop on the Lekki–Epe Expressway in Lagos State.
The fatalities included two men, three women, and a child, while four other passengers escaped unhurt. Eyewitnesses said the injured were taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Epe, and Hammond Hospital. The corpses were deposited at the FMC mortuary, awaiting identification by their families.
Rescue operations were carried out by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) teams from Corridor 13 and Zebra 46, Ibeju-Lekki Unit Command, with support from the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC).
Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, Kehinde Hamzat, confirmed the incident, attributing the crash to overspeeding, route violations, and dangerous driving.
In a statement issued by the FRSC Sector Public Education Officer, Oluwadamilola Jayeola, Hamzat extended condolences to the victims’ families, noting that speeding and reckless driving remain the leading causes of avoidable crashes across Nigerian highways.
He reiterated the warning of the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, that “speed thrills but kills,” and urged motorists to embrace patience, discipline, and defensive driving, especially as the Ember Months approach.
Hamzat stressed that road crashes are not linked to witchcraft or supernatural forces but to human recklessness, poor judgment, and disregard for traffic regulations.
