The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Thursday started enlightenment and sensitisation on distracted driving, for motorists especially tanker and trailer drivers at Kanbi motor park in Jebba Express Way to curb fatality during the ember months.
The Kwara Sector Commander, Jonathan Owoade, said that the major causes of crashes in the road is lack of concentration and sleeping while driving.
Owoade appealed to drivers to rest for 30 minutes after each five-hours driving session in order to reduce fatigue which is the factor that cause crashes.
He said that the construction of hostel in the park for drivers to rest after a long distance driving would curb road crashes.
“The rate at which crashes is happening in the area is not accepted despite the good road.
” The number of crashes recorded along Jebba Express Way is more than the whole of Kwara
” The reason why our campaign is brought here is because of the number of lives that have being loss along Oloru/Bode-Sadu/Jebba axis”, said the Sector Commander.
He noted that 159 crashes recorded between Oct. 2019 to Sept. 2020 along that axis in which 206 lives loss and 1501 people sustained various degree of injuries.
In his response, the Senior Assistant to the state Governor, Mr. Monshood Gobril, Commended the FRSC for the campaigned, saying it is done at the right time.
Gobri said that most of the drivers engaged in drug abuse which contribute to the causes of accidents in the areas.
He warned the drivers to shun over loading, speeding, and drinking of alcohol to curb accident in the areas to the bearest minimum.
He assured the communities of the construction of borehole and hospital to safe lives of the people on time incase of accidents.
Earlier, the NUPENG Chairman of Oloru-Jebba branch, Alhaji Ganiyu Jimoh, solicited for the state government support on the construction of hospital, modern motor park and fire service unit.
He explained that the construction of modern motor park would curb indiscriminate parking of trailers by the roadside that mostly causes accidents in the areas.
He noted that construction of hospital will safe many lives in case of accidents, those involved would receive medical treatment on time.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report that the drivers in attendance received free medical check up from FRSC medical team.
