The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Gombe State Command, has reported that 72 people lost their lives in 171 road crashes recorded between January and June 2025.
The sector commander, Felix Kaura, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Gombe. According to Kaura, a total of 1,156 individuals were involved in the crashes, with 641 sustaining injuries and 443 escaping unhurt.
The breakdown shows that 6.23% of the passengers involved died, 55.45% were injured, and 38.32% were uninjured.
Kaura also revealed that 234 vehicles were involved in the incidents, including 105 bicycles and tricycles — which accounted for 44.87% of the total number of vehicles affected.
Monthly fatality figures showed that 18 deaths were recorded in January, 12 in February, five in March, 16 in April, five in May, and 16 in June.
The sector commander attributed the primary causes of the crashes to speeding, reckless driving, overloading, and route violations. He criticized the behavior of some drivers who disregard traffic regulations and exceed recommended speed limits.
He further advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, particularly during the rainy season. “Drivers must exercise caution on wet roads, fix visibility issues, and reduce night driving where possible,” Kaura stated.
