Gunmen Kill Two, Injure Others in Night Attack on Plateau Community

Date:

Suspected armed bandits on Tuesday night attacked Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing two residents and injuring several others in a late-night assault that lasted about 30 minutes.

Residents said the attackers stormed the village around 10:30 p.m., shooting sporadically after many people had gone to bed, before fleeing into nearby bushes and rocky terrain ahead of the arrival of security operatives.

A community member, Dusu Bulus, described the attack as unprovoked, noting there had been no prior incident that could have suggested a reprisal assault.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Movement, Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the incident, stating that the sudden invasion threw the community into panic.

“Gunmen stormed Rim Village around 10 p.m. on Tuesday night and opened fire sporadically. As of now, two people have been confirmed killed while two others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital,” Tengwong said.

He described the attack as another troubling episode in the recurring insecurity affecting parts of Riyom and neighbouring communities, and called on security agencies to intensify patrols and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Efforts to obtain official comments from the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command and representatives of Operation Enduring Peace were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages to their phones were not returned as of the time of filing this report.
