IGP briefs Senate, assures on improved security

Date:

Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Muhammad Adamu, yesterday, assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force, NPF under his leadership would not relent in its efforts to combat the increasing rate of insecurity in the country.
This is even as the Senate promised adequate budgetary provisions for the Police to be able to combat the worrisome security situation.
Adamu gave the assurance while briefing the Senate in a closed-door session that lasted for two and half hours at the National Assembly complex, Abuja.
The acting IGP was summoned by the upper legislative chamber last week following the recent killing of Ms. Faye Mooney, a Briton official of Mercy Corps Nigeria and Mathew Oguche, her Nigerian partner at the Kabiru Castle in Kaduna State.
They both died after they were caught in a cross fire between the Police and suspected armed bandits.
The senate president, Dr. Bukola Saraki, while disclosing the issues discussed at the executive session when the chamber reverted to plenary, said that the lawmakers and the Police boss brainstormed on banditry, kidnapping and armed robbery in the country and how to effectively address the menace.
He noted that the senators received briefing from Adamu on measures being put in place to effectively address the deteriorating state of insecurity in the country.
Saraki also stated that the IGP promised to address areas bordering on discipline of police officers that had been found wanting in the course of discharging their duties.
He said: “We deliberated on armed banditry, robbery, terrorists activities and other security challenges in the country. We also discussed the Nigeria Police efforts in ameliorating the situation and challenges, and hoped to address the menace squarely.
“He also promised to address areas that have to do with discipline of officers that have been found wanting. He assured that efforts would be made on the situation in particularly on the Abuja-Kaduna highway and also on the area of intelligence and security.
On the commitment of the apex legislative chamber to help the Police in the area of funding, the President of the Senate said: “the Senate promised and is committed on areas of solving the issues.
“The Senate is ready to give adequate funding that is required in order to make the Police be able to combat the necessary stress to our security”.
