  • Experts Urged to Prioritize Awareness, Compliance, and Proactive Measures.

Professor Oluwakemi Abikoye has shed light on the evolving challenges and solutions in the field of information security in her groundbreaking inaugural lecture, titled “Invisible Bouncers in the World of Information Security” delivered on Thursday at the University of Ilorin.

The lecture, which marked the 270th Inaugural Lecture of the Better By Far university, underscored the critical importance of safeguarding digital assets in an increasingly interconnected world.

ROYAL NEWS reports that the 47-year-old Abikoye is the first female professor of Computer Science in the University of Ilorin to deliver inaugural lecture; the second to deliver an inaugural lecture at the department and the 5th to deliver inaugural lecture at the faculty of Communication and Information Science.

Drawing parallels between information security systems and bouncers at the doors of exclusive venues, Professor Abikoye illustrated how unseen mechanisms protect against a wide range of cyber threats.

“Proactive measures, constant vigilance, and in-depth knowledge of evolving risks are vital for ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability in cyberspace,” she emphasized.

To bolster the fight against cyber threats, Professor Abikoye proposed several strategies:

  • Routine Security Enhancements: Organizations must change passwords quarterly and regularly train employees on cybersecurity awareness to combat social engineering.
  • Advanced Technologies: AI, machine learning, and behavioral analytics should be employed to detect and mitigate risks in real time.
  • Incident Preparedness: Establishing incident response plans and conducting regular security audits are critical for maintaining organizational resilience.
  • Biometric Innovations: The government should integrate biometric systems, such as iris recognition and voice verification, into national identification and pensioner programs like “Am Alive.”

She further stressed the importance of regulatory compliance, data governance, and public awareness campaigns to mitigate privacy violations. Professor Abikoye also advocated for watermarking intellectual property in domains like healthcare and finance to safeguard against theft and misuse.

Concluding her lecture, Professor Abikoye highlighted the transformative potential of AI-powered technologies in achieving autonomous response and enhanced security.

With the right investments and policies, she envisions a future where digital landscapes remain secure against ever-evolving threats.
