Former Ogun State governorship aspirant and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Professor Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing alleged disrespect, rejection, and unfair treatment by the party leadership in Ogun State.
In a resignation letter dated May 31, 2026, and addressed to the Ogun APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, Obasanjo faulted the process that produced Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola as the party’s consensus governorship candidate. She argued that the exercise did not comply with the APC’s guidelines, as she and other aspirants were not properly consulted before the announcement.
Obasanjo said she had earlier agreed to support any consensus candidate chosen by the party in the interest of unity, despite claims that her supporters were attacked during the stakeholders’ meeting where Adeola emerged. She added that although she publicly accepted the outcome and pledged support for Adeola, she felt sidelined and ignored afterward.
According to her, Senator Adeola later met with her and her supporters, who presented three requests for consideration. However, she claimed the governorship candidate failed to respond to the requests months after the meeting, describing the development as part of a broader pattern of disrespect she experienced within the party.
The former senator said the treatment she received left her with no option but to leave the APC, stating that “when disrespect is the only dish served, one should leave the table.” She nonetheless thanked President Bola Tinubu, Chief Sanusi, and other party leaders who, according to her, treated her well during her time in the ruling party.
