John Mahama Urges Prosperity for Nigeria to Prevent Exodus

Date:

President of Ghana, John Mahama, has said that Ghana’s stability and prosperity are closely linked to the success of Nigeria, warning that instability in the country could increase migration pressure on smaller West African states like Ghana.

Speaking at the African Heritage Awards 2026, Mahama noted that Nigeria’s large population and regional influence make its economic and security situation a matter of continental importance. He stressed that if Nigeria thrives, neighbouring countries also benefit.

He explained that unchecked hardship in Nigeria could lead to large-scale movement of people across borders, particularly into Ghana. “If Nigeria does well, Ghana does well,” he said, adding that millions of Nigerians moving could strain smaller economies.

Mahama also revealed that his concern is personal, saying he prays daily for Nigeria’s progress. According to him, Nigeria’s challenges have direct implications for regional stability, prompting his regular prayers for the country’s success.

The Ghanaian leader further highlighted historical and cultural ties between both nations, noting ancestral links between parts of Ghana and southwestern Nigeria. He said these deep connections reinforce why Nigeria’s stability remains vital to peace and balance across West Africa.
