Team Ogun’s men’s football side booked their spot in the final of the 2024 National Sports Festival after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Golden Eaglets, who are participating under the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) initiative. The semi-final match was played on Sunday at the Ikenne centre.
The Eaglets took an early lead, but the hosts mounted a spirited comeback to overturn the deficit and seal a memorable win, thrilling home fans in a tense and dramatic encounter. With the result, Ogun State will now face Kwara state in Tuesday’s final at the MKO Abiola sport complex in Abeokuta
Kwara secured their place in the title decider with a narrow 1-0 win over Kaduna state, thanks to a 62nd-minute strike by Muhammed Abdullahi.
Meanwhile, in the women’s football semi-finals, the Flamingos – also competing under the IJA program – edged past Ogun State 1-0, with Shakirat Moshood converting a penalty to send her side into the final.
The Flamingos will go up against Delta State, which recorded a commanding 4-1 victory over Osun State in the other semi-final.
The third-place matches in both the men’s and women’s categories will also take place on Tuesday, ahead of the gold medal clashes, following confirmation from tournament organisers that all remaining football fixtures will be held at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex.
