The Kwara State Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening the health sector, particularly in reproductive and adolescent health, as it hosted delegates from the European Union and United Nations agencies during an assessment visit.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Mamman Saba Jibril, received the EU-led National Steering Committee of the Strengthening Access to Reproductive and Adolescent Health (EU-SARAH) project in Ilorin. He emphasized the administration’s continued investment in healthcare infrastructure and services.
Jibril welcomed Kwara’s selection as one of three pilot states for the EU-SARAH project, noting it as a recognition of the state’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery. He assured the delegation of the state’s full cooperation and support for the initiative’s implementation.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, described the visit as part of the project’s quarterly monitoring activities. She expressed optimism about the project’s progress, highlighting the government’s prioritization of maternal and adolescent health.
EU Country Health Advisor, Dr. Anthony Ayeke, expressed satisfaction with the level of progress recorded in Kwara, particularly in reproductive health services. He described the state’s inclusion in the pilot phase as a strategic choice and affirmed the EU’s ongoing support.
Representatives from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and UNICEF also commended the state for its efforts in reducing maternal and child mortality and addressing adolescent health concerns.
The Federal Ministry of Health’s representative, Dr. John Ovuoraye, encouraged the Kwara government to take ownership of the project by removing bureaucratic hurdles and fostering a supportive implementation environment.
Permanent Secretary, General Services, Alhaji Abdulganiyu Shuaib, and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Taoheed Abdullahi, both reaffirmed the state’s commitment to ensuring the project’s success.
Delegates from Adamawa and Sokoto States, which are also part of the pilot phase, joined the Kwara visit to share insights and experiences on project implementation.
The EU-SARAH project is aimed at improving access to quality reproductive and adolescent health services across selected Nigerian states.
