Kwara seals-off buildings for environmental law violation

Date:

The Kwara State Government, has reiterated government’s commitments to sustain hygienic and safe environment, to prevent the outbreak of cholera and other related diseases, inimical to the healthy living of Kwara residents, even as task force seals off another eight buildings, for violating environmental law, at Sabo-Oke, in Ilorin South Local Government Area of of the State.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge disclosed this in Ilorin today, while fielding questions from journalists, in her office.

Hajjia Nafisat Buge further affirmed the commitment of “the present administration, under the able leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to the sustainability of clean, hygienic and safe environment, that the entire Kwarans and potential investors would be proud of.”

“It is no longer news that Environmental Health Officers across the 16 Local Government Areas of the State, have started the enforcement of environmental laws, most especially, house to house inspection of toilet facilities, in order to sustain healthy living of residents.

“This development has started yielding positive results. Our environmental taskforce recently sealed off six buildings at Onikun-Kewu Street, Adabata. In the same vein today, another eight buildings have also been sealed off at Iponrin, Sabo Oke area, within Ilorin metropolis, for violating environmental laws despite the incessant advocacy from the ministry, on the need to stop open defecation and build standard toilets. To our dismay, some of the houses exposed human excreta to the environment through their defective soak away which is dangerous to healthy living of the residents, in these areas”, she added.

The Commissioner assured members of the public that, government will continue the house to house inspection across the state, to ascertain the level of compliance and also enforce environmental laws, in order to sustain healthy living for all.

She therefore charged Kwara residents to cooperate with the present administration, in its efforts to promote clean and safe environment, that will be habitable to all residents of the State.

Bug thereafter charged the landlords, to ensure that, standard toilet facilities are provided in their respective houses, with a warning that, whoever is found wanting, henceforth, will be prosecuted accordingly, citing Section 5, Subsection 2 of Kwara State Environment laws.
